How Good Is Justin Fargas?

Things we can agree on: Fargas is fast. He came out of nowhere last year to have a productive season, rushing for 1009 yards on 222 carries while starting 7 games. Fargas runs hard, doesn't avoid contact, keeps to himself, and seems like a great teammate. He waited patiently until he received his chance, then made the most of it. We can also agree that dating back to college, Fargas has rarely gone an entire season without missing games due to injury. That said, if Fargas stays healthy next year, he can have another productive season in Oakland's one-cut running scheme.

What we may not agree on: Fargas is an average running back. We can break this down two ways - through stats, or through observation. Let's begin with the numbers. Fargas started each game between weeks 10 and 15. He had zero rushes over 30 yards. These were his yards-per-rush averages: 3.5, 2.7, 6.3, 4.4, 3.8, and 3.4. We lost four of those games, with three of them (vs Bears, at Vikings, vs Colts) being non-blowouts. During that stretch, Fargas had a 4+ yards-per-carry average only against the Broncos and the Chiefs. Denver ranked 30th against the run last season, the Chiefs 28th. Fargas also had that monster game early in the season against the Dolphins, who ranked 32nd (dead last) against the run. He averaged 4.1 yards per carry as a starter, and 3.9 during December. His longest reception was for 17 yards.

So the numbers say that Fargas got fat against some very bad run defenses. Now that's not his fault, he did what he should have done against them. But other than decent games against the Titans and Texans, Fargas didn't accomplish much that would be described as overly impressive. We know the system takes average backs and helps them produce above-average numbers, so consider that when addressing Fargas' stats last season. We saw Lamont Jordan break 100 yards on a few occasions. We could even say we were more impressed by Dominic Rhodes late-season 100-yard games against two very tough defenses - Jacksonville's and San Diego's. So while Fargas' cumulative numbers look solid, his consistency, game-changing long plays, and pass-catching numbers were sorely lacking.

What did our eyes tell us? Well, we saw Fargas running hard and making good cuts, getting to the outside often, and running well against some soft defenses. Unfortunately, we also saw very little ability to make defenders miss, or ability to generate yards after contact. We saw Fargas' upright running style, lack of vision, and lack of wiggle expose himself to numerous highlight-level de-cleater hits. We saw a guy with average to below-average hands who only once had more than three catches in a game. We saw some 15 and 20-yard rushes, but only one run longer than 30 yards all season.

Do we count on Fargas to churn out more 100-yard games next season against the Patriots, Ravens, Jets, Bills, Panthers, Bills, and Bucs? This would remind me of the way we just assumed that our defense would be great last year due to our returning all starters from a "top-8" defense in 2006. One should always look to improve every area of a team, regardless of what transpired the previous season.

So what's the plan next year? We split the carries at something of a 15-10-5 level between Fargas, Bush, and Rhodes. This assumes that Bush will be the pre-leg break beast we saw at Louisville. But what if he's lost a step or that lateral quick-feet ability that made defenders grasp at the Autumn Wind? Then he's just an average grinder, nothing too special. So while I like Fargas as much as the next guy, I am not going to pretend that the running back position can not be improved upon. And when you're dealing with a position that will touch the ball 30 times a game, I think we can all agree it's one that needs to be consistently evaluated and improved.

Whether you think McFadden could give us the first great mutli-threat runner since Charlie Garner and post 1,800 all-purpose yards in the Oakland system, or feel that Darren is overhyped, let's not pretend that we're rock solid at the running back position and would be wasting a pick if Al Davis decides to gamble a little on one of the few draft talents this year that could become a legitimate super star. Can he stop the run? Of course not. Can a quality run-plugging DT be found in round 4 or in post-June free agency? Probably a lot more easily than a runner who over the span of three seasons destroyed Georgia, USC, Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, South Carolina, and LSU all at least once.

Again, this isn't to knock Fargas, or to suggest that we shouldn't drive a defensive tackle. Instead my intent is to simply point out that there is room for improvement at the running back position - improvement that would help us score more points, rest the defense longer, and win a few more games. We were complacent with what we thought was a great highly-ranked defense in 2006. I won't blame Davis if he learned from that mistake and simply drafts the best talent available regardless of position at the 4-spot in two weeks.

ok first off.. your way off track.. 1 Stats can be twisted to support anyones arguement at any one time.. second.. with Fargas and Rhodes.. not even counting for Bush since he is a unknown at this point.. we were solid at the RB position.. this arguement that Fargas only gained yards against soft defenses is rediculous.. i remember watching LT rush for 15 yards against the Eagles not to long ago.. thats just one example.. you can twist this whole thing to support the drafting of Mcfadden.. if you feel thats what you need to do.. but in reality.. we didnt lose games this past season because Fargas was our running back.. we lost games because of our complete INABILITY to stop the opposing teams RUN GAME.. why not just tell it like it is instead of twisting and skewing stats to support your arguement.. we stop the run and protect Russell and we will win football games.. we fail to do those 2 things.. and it wont matter who we have at RB.. thats the fact buddy...

it seems you simply say negative things, without really backing it up. Not sure what LT rushing for 15 yards against the Eagles has to do with anything. I show you who Fargas got yards against, and who he struggled against. Those are facts.

I tell you that Fargas is injury prone and Bush is a question mark. You mention (admit) Bush is a question mark, but not before stating that I'm way off base. Weird. Gets old hearing your constant negative remarks that have no evidence other than "you're wrong, I'm right." A little more effort please, both here and in our message boards.

The Raiders are just average in the RB department. No one does anything exceptionally well. How is Farglass having good games against weak defenses a ridiculous argument? You did a awful explaining especially since you tried to use the best RB in the league as support for it. That is awful man because Ladanian has consistently in his career had big games against good defenses cant say the same for Farglass. In the games verse Minny and GB it was obvious this guy is someone you cant give the ball when talking about making a championship team because that is the bottom line my friend. Don't use the oline excuse because if they are blamed for his bad games then they are praised for the good games. I got something for ya

Detroit Week 1: Started down 17-0 to take the lead only to lose the game as the secondary sucked along with McCown sucking in the 4th quarter. Tatum Bell had 87 yards on the ground and did not have a special day on the defense. When it counted late in the game the offense gave up two turnovers and couldn't score.

Denver Week 2: Run defense was terrible of course but thing is the 4th quarter we were leading and got passed on all day up the field and gave up huge pass plays in OT. McCown stunk as usual and missed Porter on the game winning TD. Jano's miss?

SD Week 6: Ladanian does his thing but yet we dont get blown out and still have a chance but beside the fact the run defense stunk, Culpepper and Lamont Jordan were far worse that game. 14-7 by the goalline led to zero points. That lost the game right there!

KC Week 7: The run defense actually played well. LJ had a 55 yard run that made his stats look better but he was shut down for most of the day. The fact that the offense couldnt do squat was our end fate. Culpepper made a bad decision late in the game to seal it but lack of offense killed us that game score was 12-10!

Tenn Week 8: An injured VY beat us. Real sad because the run defense didn't play well especially Warren Sapp. He was the worse but yet late in the game we have a chance to take the lead but USC boy wants to drop the ball. Lack of offense in a 13-9 game killed us. Tommy Kelly gets hurt, dont think that didnt hurt cuz it did

Hou Week 9: Most embarrassing game of the year. We let Sage Rosenfels and Green/Dayne bust our ass. McCown stunk and Kiffin's gameplan stunk even worse. Farglass had 100 yards but didn't have a gamebreaking plays just like all of our skills position players. Nothing worse than watching Sage Rosefels complete a 3rd and long only to throw a deep TD over Routt to go up 24-10!

Chi Week 10: The Raider defense plays hard as they can without Nmandi. McCown and the Raider offense stink so bad we blow a 4th quarter lead. Chi-town RBs did nada that day. Berrian one play did us in and McCown's usual fumble or INT in the 4th happened again. The Run game was mediocre

Minny Week 11: Now is when your case looks good becuse the run defense was atrocious but the LBs and secondary by far were worse than the line. At the point of attack they missed far too many tackles. Culpepper passed for some good yards but the run game did squat against a stout run defense.

GB Week 14: What can you say about this game the entire team was awful. We didn't want to play in that cold and it was obvious. McCown stunk, the run game nonexistent, and special team was terrible. GB did whatever they wanted

Indy Week 15: The team fought hard against an extremely injured Colts team. Farglass did okay but where were the big runs. Rhodes can in and did okay as well. McCown sucks as usual. The run defense was good as well as the pass defense. Fabian is a punk and lets a rookie do him in in the 4th quarter. We drive but because we lack talent we can tie the game at 21. Russell got in but didnt look so hot.

Jax Week 16: Blowout while our QB of the future takes over. The game was over before it started. Warren Sapp and Kirk Morrison set the tone on JAX first play of scrimmage. JAX did whetever they felt was needed to beat our ass. Rhodes runs well against a stout run defense

SD Week 17: Ladanian does nothing! I mean nothing. Sands wakes up from the dead as well as the linebackers. Rhodes runs well for the 2nd week in a row vs a stout run defense. Jamarcus showed some flashes but his early INT and 2nd half fumble in the endzone(thanks to loser sims) were nails in the coffin.

Sorry Tomy but you can't dispute these facts. No you are completely wrong to say the run defense is why we solely lost games. We lacked talent at key positions all over the field. We had Sapp at a DT which is awful now replaced by Kelly. Huff's closing speed can be better utilized at FS and Gibril Wilson play up closer to the line will eliminate alot of those big runs you saw last year. Morrison being a MLB hurts as well. He needs to go back outside and we need to find a true sure tackling MLB. Also burgess hurts the line because he isnt big and plays on the strong side. Him and Sapp next to each other was the worse idea ever.

On offense the lack of stability at QB killed us. The wideouts were not cutting it and the RBs had no big play ability. Miller did well as a rook but the team hasnt had a play maker with killer instinct in a while Tomy and you know it! You damn right we are arguing in McFadden's favor. Unlike you we actually want a play maker in Oakland. We want momentum changing players here in Oakland! You ever seen a big play turn the game game completely around? It could be 5 minutes left in a good game and we are up by 3 points and all of a sudden a big 60-70 yarder run or screen out of the backfield goes for a TD. That is back breaking for any team!!!

I just do not understand how people can justify not having that component to their offense. You need speed at the RB and WR position. Idiots love to hang on the balls of that loser ass 2002 season but Gruden knew our speed was lacking and many analysts during the year kept mentioning we didn't have speed.

I'm sorry but your constant USC blinders prohibits you from making an accurate evaluation of this situation. You believe Farglass is the answer and Sedrick Ellis should be our pick. What sort of crack do they sell in LA?

Alex your article was on the money and it says the same shit I have been saying for months now. I am an asshole on this site to many but dammit I been correct enough to run my mouth. Farglass will not do shit in 2008 once all these teams have some true game film on him. No team ever came in gameplannning for Farglass. They will in 2008 plus that contract he signed was essentially a one year deal. They know he aint it. Yeah he runs hard never complains and is a good teammate. Hell I met him twice and he was cool but shoot the talent isnt there as far as being a starter. We got a chance to change the face of our franchise and the NFL as we know it but Tomy and others are too scared to do so. The crazy thing I like Tomy and he usually says some factual things but he is just way off here.

AlbDaRaiders gives me hope in finding a fan with some common sense. Alex Chavez doesn't need to defend his comments. We all are raider faithful, and we will stand by our team. So please be real. For everybody who thinks the only reason we lose is because run defense go to itunes, Search for "NFL Follow Your Team - Raiders" and buy/watch EVERY game again.

Add up every miss by Sebastian Janikowski, watch Fabian Washington, Stuart Schweigert,Hiram Eugene get beat inside outside, miss tackle after tackle, getting out jumped and out played. At least Nnamdi Asomugha gave us every ounce of heart he has. I love these players, but they don't help us win EVERY week. Warren Sapp, Derrick Burgess lined up side by side DIDNT help us win. I love Justin Fargus, but no one here is crying for Lamont Jordan, who was well on the same number season as Justin Pre-injry. We need a Playmaker on O. We have the tools to turn around our Defense. WHO the the other side of the ball instills fear to the other team. Javon Walker will work hard for us as well as Drew Carter and Ronald Curry. Zack Miller and John Madsen will work hard for us. Jamarcus Russell has to work hard for us. So we need a PLAYMAKER.. we need less pressure on our QB. I think this kid can do that.

My point is no one has a good enough argument to say a DL is are most pressing need right now. We have a chance to in two years change the momentum of a LOSING franchise. Why pass that up?
